Codifying a change management consultancy

The Brief

Blue-chip firms are looking to deliver higher volume and more complex Change - faster, better and cheaper.

It also means that change is no longer the preserve of the traditional Change community – but is increasingly becoming a core capability of the whole organisation.

myProteus, a leading Change Management consultancy, saw an opportunity to use technology to transform its offering and meet this demand. Whilst still delivering against their values of minimum intervention for maximum return and doing what is right for the client first and foremost.

myProteus distilled this opportunity into wanting a class-leading self-service portal aimed at helping corporates improve how Executives, novices or practitioners deliver change. Codifying its service and transforming its business.

The portal needed to translate myProteus’ unique IPR into a digital product. It needed to deliver robust eLearning modules, peer-to-peer collaboration and a set of comprehensive Change Management diagnostic tools – in one place.

The Portal also needed to manage the commercial sensitivity and confidential nature of the data, whilst still allowing myProteus to aggregate anonymised data for its insights/continuous improvement programme.

The subscription business model required variable access based on individual, company and groups profiles.

Lastly, being G-Cloud 10 compliant was an explicit and key requirement from a development and from a hosting perspective.

The Solution

12 months was spent trying to understand the real customer need.

That included the creation of an ongoing forum whose members comprised of a cross section of industry leaders from: Guardian Media Group, a digital marketing firm, CTO Ministry of Defence, Ofcom’s Advisory Committee for England; Former Chairman: Highways Agency, CBI Council in Wales and the Building Societies Association; NED of the Rural Payments Agency, Ex BBC Controller of Digital Media. Many of whom have been recognised in the Queens Honours for services to their sector.

This then led to an intensive UX prototyping phase, delivering a functional prototype. It was tested amongst a discrete set of users. Codifying a service into a system is one of the things which Skyron specialise in and excites us most.

The prototyping phase drew out the key areas for refining the proposition and UX. We also created a new brand identity.

The dramatic shift that the portal aimed to create was to move away from delivering templates and learning by rote, to creating a common language of change amongst companies. This was big a UX challenge, all whilst being 100% secure.

That security from a development perspective meant the database design was the cornerstone of the development.

The design addressed how to keep sensitive project data from multiple clients completely separate. It used SQL Views and multiple instances. Secondly, the data model had to support subscriptions, data aggregation and data anonymisation and lastly the management of the eLearning content.

The database was one of our first to be designed with PowerBI in mind. This allows secure in-depth analysis of anonymised, aggregated client data. The database design is one of the more complicated that we delivered in 2018.

The portal uses complex charting technology, whilst still meeting a number of Accessibility requirements and IE9 compliance – no mean feat!.

Results

Over last 9 months, one of the tools alone has been used 8,000 users by Blue-Chip firms which equates to saving over £270m in external consultancy.

  • Typically, each user saves between £300k- £500k in consultancy costs.

But it isn’t solely about savings in consultancy spend. It is also about developing internal capability at a fraction of typical training costs.

This has led to Top-Consultant.com leading columnist to publish the following: "I’ve been waiting—and sporadically predicting that consultants would use technology to transform both the reach of scarce expertise and its cost to the client. The Proteus offering leads me to think this is about to change."

Unsurprisingly, these results make this engagement our highest ever Return on Investment for a client!

"At the prestigious UK Business Awards 2019 last week, we were delighted to win an award in the "Disruptive Business Model using Technology" category #BAUK19 #ukbizaward For MyProteus (www.myproteus.com)."

We developed a suite of tools which use predictive analytics and benchmark data to improve Change Management project and programmes significantly. Delivering a rapid and demonstrable step-change in project and people performance - as well as minimising costs and helping to achieve sustainable self-sufficiency. Which reduces the reliance on consultants.
